Refugee Outreach Associate

Where will I serve? A parish on the southeast side of the city of Syracuse.
Who will I serve? Newly arrived refugees primarily from the Congo.
What will I do? Work with the Refugee Welcoming Task Force to support newly arrived refugees by helping them establish themselves socially, financially, and legally.
What will my day look like?
- Engage refugee members into the life and ministry of the parish.
- Encourage refugees to use their gifts, and to see themselves as givers, contributing to the life of the parish, and partaking in service activities to the larger Syracuse community.
- Assist refugees with shelter: finding housing, moving furniture, working with landlords, and navigating heating bills.
- Assist refugees with food: direct delivery of food and helping families participate in food banks/pantries.
- Assist refugees with clothing: distributing diapers and other clothing.
- Assist refugees with employment: helping to find and keep jobs.
- Assist refugees with legal aid: connecting to volunteer lawyers and legal organizations.
- Assist refugees with transportation: driving to doctor appointments, food banks/pantries, new jobs, etc.
- Assist refugees with online services: helping with unemployment benefits, health insurance, green cards, searching for jobs, helping students with at home digital learning, etc.
What gifts and talents will I bring and grow in? Ability to work with a diverse population. A welcoming, friendly, and compassionate demeanor. An interest in hearing the stories of others. Patience and understanding.
